Pug Info
The Pug is one of the oldest breeds still in existence. Pugs have been basically the same for 2400 years. A lot is still unknown about the origin of the pug. It is agreed that the breed is from the Orient. In China, pugs were the pet of choice in Buddhist monasteries. There is known history of pugs being popular in Japan and in the royal palaces of Europe. Called "Mopshond" (from the Dutch word "to grumble"), "Mops" and "Carlin", the origin of the name "Pug Dog" has many different explanations. Most acceptable is that which likens the dog's facial expression to that of the marmoset monkeys that were popular pets of the early 1700s and were known as Pugs. The Pug has been an accepted breed register able with the American Kennel Club since 1885. This lovable breed is always well-groomed and ready for the show ring. He is small but requires no coddling and his face soon wiggles its way into even the toughest hearts. Pugs are pleaser's and love to do about anything with their humans. The Pug adapts very well to an apartment, a mansion, and all loving homes in between. Above info from AKC.org For more information, please visit our store for some great pug books! |
