Andy adopted Sept 2007 The Moore Family North Carolina UPDATE DEC 2007! Andy is doing wonderful. He is napping with a child as we speak. He loves to eat, sleep, and be loved and is very happy. The children have learned not to feed him "people" food--as the consequences are not very pleasant. He goes on two long walks a day. He is doing very well with the other dogs at home. There is one Alpha male and Andy seems more than happy for him to remain in charge, so there have been no problems. The cats really excite Andy and he loves to chase them, but then he doesn't know what to do, so he just takes a nap! Andy has had to go to the vet once. He has severe skin allergies. He was given an allergy shot, some antibiotics, and a special shampoo. Since then we have been able to keep it under control with Benadryl and weekly baths. We love Andy so much and adopting him has been the most wonderful gift. We are so lucky to have found each other. Thanks so much for everything!

Baby aka Sweety Pie Nov. 2007 The Cole Family Stuarts Draft, VA UPDATE: Baby-Sweety Pie is the girl pug we've been waiting for to complete our family. She's 12lbs of PURE LOVE. The moment she came into our lives we knew she was here to stay. She is still having pee-pee accidents and doesn't seem to understand that doggies do *ALL* their business outside... but in our eyes, she can do no wrong. She loves to cuddle with her Daddy in the recliner each night, so now both of our laps have a pug!

UPDATE DEC 2007!: Bodie is doing great! He is a real joy. He is very well behaved, and lets you know when he wants something! If he is on the bed, and one of us gets off, he barks as he has to know where we are at all times (when we're home). We still give him Bendadryl for his allergies, and continue to bathe him in Selsun Blue. He has adjusted well, and seems to be very happy! We love him very much!

Brutus (formerly known as "Rocky") adopted Oct 2007 The Dales Family Berryville, Virginia UPDATE! May 2008: What can I say about Brutus???? He has come a long way. He is a 22lb ball of energy! He goes from morning to night non-stop! He is a handful to say the least. We think he has ADD or ADHD! Won't let David or I out of his sight. We can leave him separately, not both of us at the same time. He loves to play fetch with his squeaky tennis balls. He will play fetch for hours if you let him. He has learned the sit, stay, paw & down commands.(so long as you can keep his attention) He still tries to eat his and everybody's food & treats. We can't seem to convince him there is enough food for everyone! He also delights in stealing everyone's toys too. Our oldest fur son, Draco has begun to let Brutus know who is the oldest & in charge. When Draco has had enough, he lets Brutus know with a well-placed growl. Brutus knows when he hears Draco's growl, it is time to take his marbles and play somewhere else! We are so grateful to MAPR for allowing us to make Brutus a member of our family. He is a constant source of entertainment. Besides he looks like an angel when he sleeps. The horns reappear when he wake's up!

Daisy (formerly known as "Honey")
The Morrison family
Matthews, NC
Update Aug 2007:She is fitting in really well with our family. My son loves her and they have a great game of tug of war every night with her pink stuffed poodle. She sleeps in her new big fluffy bed at night in our room next to Duke's bed and loves it. She snores and snorts away. It is really funny. She went to the vet last Saturday to get her stitches out from her surgery and all looks great! She is trying to be the dominate dog. She has been trained to use the dog door we have already! She is really smart and very easy to train with little effort. We are so impressed also that she has not 1 accident in our house. I think someone did work with her because she listens so well. She seems very happy with us and we have already fallen in love with her.

Ellie adopted July 2007 The Lauscher Family Virginia UPDATE! From the moment Ellie walked in the front door of her new home in mid-July, she was "home." She is perfectly housetrained -- not even an accident after she refuses to put a paw outside when it's raining, eats like a champ, greets all humans with a wonderful "happy dance" snortling through whatever toy (or sock or shoe) is easily within reach, and gives nose kisses indiscriminately. She ignores the cats or quickly gets out of their way when they give her a hiss. She is truly Ellie the Wonder Pug!

Elvis adopted October 21st 2007 The Lippi Family Virginia UPDATE NOV 2007!!! After searching for 3 months to find the pug for us, we found Elvis! He had a terrible time before being rescued, but has bounced back like the superstar that he is. He is healthy at 19lbs and no signs of fleas or any other pesty things. He has fit right in with our family and especially with Carrington. He loves to go out to the bus stop with her in the morning and waits patiently for her to return in the afternoon. They go for a customary "run" around the culdesac before coming inside for treats and kisses. Elvis loves to play and "chase" after his squeaky toys, especially his monkey! He loves to go for rides in the car and for long walks outside. When it's time for bed and everyone begins to snuggle in, Elvis does the same right at the end of Carrington's bed. His snoring doesn't seem to bother her at all. We are so happy that we have finally found such a sweet addition to our family......our superstar, our Elvis!

Elvis adopted 2007 The Lee Family North Carolina UPDATE!:This is Elvis sitting on the loveseat in our den. Doesn't he look as if he owns the place? We're very pleased with him and he seems pleased with us, too. Kojak, our older pug, has gone from tolerating him with some fear to sleeping with him in our bed. All four of us, one happy family. So, the adoption has gone quite well so far. It's been somewhat of an adjustment from having the one pug for 10 years, who is now disabled and can't get around as well to having two pugs, one of which is charging and running and jumping all over the place. But it's a good transition, and Elvis seems as if he's been waiting his whole life to be with us. We're very happy to have him here.

We are now considering getting a king size bed...Fezz & Earl have to both be under the covers and that doesn't leave much room for the humans! Miss Fezzy has been to 2 pug meetups & is enjoying all her new friends. We will keep you updated and I'll send some of their X-mas pictures, too! Thank you, MAPR, you have made us so very happy! Twinky (formerly known as Frankie) Herbeck/Miller family North Carolina adopted Sept. 2007 UPDATE DEC 2007! We've had Twinkie for a couple of months now, and she is doing wonderfully! Everyone who meets her loves her. We are going to Buffalo, NY to visit our families for Christmas and we're bringing Twinkie to meet them. They are all very excited to meet this little pug that we keep boasting about! It should be interesting to see how she reacts to the snow!
We went to see Dr. Monce recently and good news! We are weaning her off of the Phenobarbital! Yay! He said she's doing great and her seizures are seeming to be kept under control for the time being. What a relief! Twinkie is hilarious. Whenever we are eating, she just stares at us and bulges her eyes out even bigger than they already are. She also finally learned how to jump up on the couch. She's really silly when she does it because she has to take a running start to make it. Overall, Twinkie is doing very well with us! We love her very much and couldn't be happier!!! Thank you so much!!! :)

Izzy adopted SEPT '07 McDougall Family Virginia UPDATE OCT 2007: Izzy is doing great! She is pretty much house trained (hope that I didn't jinx it!) and has learned her way around the apartment so she isn't bumping into things as much. We went with her foster mom to a Fall Festival on Saturday and Izzy seemed to enjoy herself. I am amazed at how well she is adapting even though she is blind. We're on week 3 of our Basic Obedience. I am so glad that I have her in my life and I am thankful to MAPR and the ladies that helped us through the adoption process. Amy Lane and Debbie Gretz are invaluable and very graciously answered all of my questions.

Kitty now known as BAILEY adopted OCTOBER '07 The Mark Family North Carolina UPDATE DEC 2007! Bailey is doing great. She is the sweetest little thing. Very cuddly and adoring of her mom and dad. She loves her big brother, and snuggles with him when he lets her. She has shown alpha tendencies and can be very jealous of attention paid to others, but she’s a doll. We visited the vet for heartworm and flea meds, and she has gained 3 pounds. She has a nice round tummy and looks very healthy, but we’re curbing the extra spoon of moist food now. All in all she is the queen of her domain and we are glad she allows us to live here with her.

Littleman
Gilchrist Family Raleigh,NC UPDATE! OCT 2007 Little Man continues to be an absolute sweetie pie. We have so many nicknames for him like Mr. Magoo, Butterball turkey, Little Piggie and he has earned them all! He enjoys walking with our Lab but tires out by the top of our street, so we plonk him in a stroller like a baby. Surprisingly, he loves the view and does not fuss at all to get out unless he wants to meet a passing dog...he's very social around this neighborhood! He and Dr. Monce have become good friends too! He was a trooper thru dental surgery, having 4 rotted teeth pulled without so much as a wimper. We suspect he has a bladder stone since he's had 2 painful (howling) tract infections recently...so we'll investigate that further in the future w/an ultrasound. His back legs buckle frequently and he cannot do stairs hardly (Dr. Monce says that's caused by an arthritic spine), so we hand carry him up when needed. He is just starting to snuggle at night with the Lab (she loves him and he is indifferent toward her) and he wants attention from humans 24/7...which is great with us. My husband was holding him like a baby in the rocker today, petting his belly, and told Little Man he hopes he'll be with us for many many, years to come. He's an old guy for sure and we treasure each day he is in our lives. I'd say he's fully acclimated now to our home and TOTALLY spoiled!! Thanks so much for letting us become his forever family---we wouldn't trade him for the world!

Milo adopted 2007 Haviland/Shevel Family Maryland UPDATE! Things are going great! Milo is adjusting very well. We were fortunate to be able to adopt him right before a long break for both of us, so its allowed us all to become accustomed to one another, take long walks, and learn his routine. He has brought so much happiness into our lives. Morey (our first pug) loves having a brother and I see a major difference in her happiness, attitude, and enthusiasm. We will continue to work with Milo on his aggression with food - but other than that, he is doing great! He is sleeping well and has no problem eating dinner! We have left them alone for limited amounts of time and they do perfectly fine. I've attached a picture of us all (Milo is on the left & Morey is on the right.)

Napoleon adopted May 2007 The Eckenrode Family UPDATE!: We both knew right away that Napoleon was perfect for us. He is such a happy and polite little man. When we adopted him, he was a bit overweight(32 pounds). He has lost about 2 pounds so far. We keep him on a special diet and now that it's getting cooler here, he is getting more frequent walks. We love him so much! Thanks to everybody at MAPR that helped bring this little boy home to us!

Girls get too crazy! She is doing good with the house training! So far, 5th day without an
accident! YEAH!! She is getting HUGE. Scooby is a little 3 1/2 yr old petite Pug and Nemi is almost bigger than Scooby! I think she will become a big strong Lady. She is so beautiful and very, very smart! She listens so well and
training her to sit, lay, come, & bring ball was great- she had it down in no time.

Neville adopted AUG '07 Horstman Family North Carolina
Neville was found on the streets of Durham. Since coming to live with us, he has gained 2 lbs and quickly made himself the center of attention. He loves to use the puggie steps to get on the bed to sleep with his human family and loves to swim in the river at his grandmother's house. He spends a lot of time attempting to get his elderly pug brother and sister to play with him (usually to no avail) so he plays with his cousins, a Boxer and a Great Dane instead. Neville's hobbies are eating, watching our chickens forage, and having massages. His favorite new pug friend is Scooter, of MAPR fame."

Dean/Enerson Family North Carolina March 2007
Update Feb 2008!:She is a perfect fit for Adam and I. We've been able to work with her on her social issues but despite all of her neuroses (and don't we all have them?), we could not be happier. It gives us so much joy to provide her with a "forever home," and there is a hardly day that goes by that she doesn't make us laugh out loud. Thank you, again, for all of your help in bringing Paisley to us. Our experience was so positive with you and MAPR, and I have recommended MAPR to many of my friends who have been searching for dogs."

Zeus & Lucy (formerly known as "Patchwork" & "Precious") The Hill Family North Carolina adopted April 2007
Zeus & Lucy came to us just a tad overweight, a little sad, and what we could only assume was a little confused. Since their homecoming Lucy has trimmed down and become more able to take walks and hop into a lap- where she will lick your face until you can't stand it anymore. And Zeus has trimmed down as well, become much more energetic, and has established himself as the man of the house. Lucy is Zeus' mother, and for all practical purposes, she mothers the children as well. We couldn't be happier with the outcome of the adoption- MAPR facilitated it so well. Our house is blessed with the pitter patter of pug paws and just months after they arrived, we can't remember life without them. They are beautiful, smart, insatiably loving, and absolutely a joy to be with!

Pugsley adopted by The Edwards Family UPDATE January 2009!!!:
Mr. Pugsly arrived at our house on December 22nd, 2007 as a wonderful Christmas present. After 7.5 years of questionable living, he was skinny, shy and in need of lots of love. From that timid beginning, Mr. Pugsly has blossomed into a confident and healthy middle aged Pug. He went from needing constant encouragement just to walk on a leash, to romping about in the park every afternoon. He has brought us joy beyond our imagination and has become our other pug Sophie’s Seeing Eye dog. As you can see in the photos he has a love of all things soft, perhaps from all the years of not having fun things like beds and toys. After a delayed start, our little man has finally hit his stride toward a life of luxury and love. Thank you MAPR!

Pugslie now known as Solomon adopted Dec 2007 The Benson/Blake Family Maryland UPDATE! Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how Solomon (yes, we renamed Pugslie) is doing. He has adjusted wonderfully to his new home with Bobby and I. He has not had even one accident in the house. He had his first trip to South Carolina, and you were right that he has some trouble in the car. He was able to settle down and sleep soundly on our laps for 1200 miles though. He has finished his antibiotic and his appetite is healthy. He is truly protective of both Bobby and I and sleeps between us nightly in bed. We are so happy that he has become a member of our family. We just love him so much. Thanks again for all of your help and taking such good care of him before we adopted him.

Raven Adopted 2007 The Assante Family UPDATE! We are delighted with Raven and so happy that she has joined our family. She's a wonderful dog and very easy to live with. In fact it is because she is so well behaved that even during a difficult time for us as a family, she has not caused any problems - the opposite is true - she brings stress relief with her affectionate, energetic, happy personality. She came to us house broken (she has had only 2 "accidents", early on), she sleeps through the night, and doesn't chew inappropriately (only her toys). I can't really think of any behavioral problems at all. We already had another dog at the time that we took Raven, and at this point both dogs are on the same schedule -they get walked together and eat at the same time. We have five children and all the kids enjoy Raven as much as my husband and I do.

He put some weight on, it helps him keep his balance & operate his legs. He is much stronger and nothing stops him from getting wherever he wants to be. All of us are very thankful to the great MAPR people who brought us together. HAVE A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON AND WE'LL STAY IN TOUCH!

Dollie Mae (formerly "Rosa") adopted Dec 2007 The Bastian Family
UPDATE Jan 2008!: Dollie Mae has adjusted very well in her new “forever” home. The crate sleeping lasted less than a week because her mommy & daddy needed sleep. She gets under the covers next to her mommy and doesn’t move all night. She is being fed puppy food to try and put a couple more lbs. on her. She loves to eat and makes sure her brother or sisters do not get any of her food. Her Poodle sister, Rowena, wouldn’t even be in the same room with her the first week but she has come to accept her. She and her Black Pug brother, Alvin, bonded immediately. Her Min Schnauzer sister, Scarlett, pays her no attention but that’s how she is w/ everyone. Mostly Dollie Mae loves to sleep but when she gets a burst of energy it’s so funny watching her chase Alvin from room-to-room. She is still learning the routine but it took her no time to learn where the treats are kept. She is just a DOLL!

Rudy The Rose Family Williamsburg,VA July 2007
Rudy's getting on pretty dern good! We're working on the in-house marking with some success. My kids have connected super well with him and Dakota is slowly getting more and more comfortable around her new housemate. For example, Dakota's always been a little nervous riding in the car, but when we take the pups for a ride, Rudy seems to have a calming effect on her. All in all, things are great!

Sadie May McCroskey/Thorson Family Virginia adopted Mar. 2007
UPDATE! AUG '07:Sadie's progress has been slow, but steady. She is fully housetrained now and her flinching when someone moves towards her has decreased significantly. She is showing her personality now, and provides us with much joy and laughter. I made the mistake of putting plastic steps (for getting in and out of a car) next to my bed, so now her favorite past time is getting all of her bones and toys out of the toy basket and putting them on the bed. Of course my favorite past time, is putting them back in the basket, so she has to start over!
Thank you all for bringing her into our lives. I recommend MAPR to everyone I see because of the fabulous experience we had with Sadie's adoption.

Sammy
The Benziane Family
Williamsburg, VA
June 2007 UPDATE Aug 2008! Sammy's doing well and he and Jackson are getting along super-well. He's finally becoming friends with the closest neighbor dogs (another pug named Jackson and a golden retriever.) Generally speaking, he seems to do better with bigger dogs than other small dogs, and I know you had said that was the case in foster care also. He seems to have gained some good strength in his back end-- I think our stairs to the bedroom and the stairs on the back deck have been good exercise for him. He still occasionally gets some weird weakness though, that almost makes me wonder if it might be his back rather than his hips. I'm just keeping an eye on it. I went ahead and took him to a veterinary ophthalmologist to see if I could get more info about how much sight he does have and to make sure I'm doing everything I can to preserve it, since he's only got the one eye. There's good news/bad news. The good news: he does NOT have glaucoma!!!! Isn't that great?!?! So he's off his Xalatan drops and his pressures are still looking great. The bad news, though, is that he does have a lot of chronic irritation and scarring and he's recommending surgery to close his eye a bit and keep the inner eyelashes from rubbing any more. He's got him on a steroid/antibiotic eye drop twice a day, which will drop to once a day later this week and then we see him again next week. If he's doing great, we may stick with treating it medically, but I'm thinking he'll probably end up having surgery this fall, when I can work things out to take a few days off of work. I'm including a few pictures from the last trip to my dad's-- he lives on a big wide creek, and the boys LOVE going to visit grandaddy! I thought that swimming would be good strengthening for his hips, although I don't think he could swim without his life jacket. He seems to like the water well enough. Here's Sammy in the classic front-legs-splayed-out Sammy pose with Jackson and my dad. I can't thank you enough for giving Sam such a great foster home and for trusting me with him. He makes me happy!

Seamus adopted November 2007 From Maryland Pug Rescue Hutchison/Goodman Family UPDATE Sept 2008!: I was reading your website and saw the Successes section and wanted to submit a picture of our pug Seamus. We adopted him from Maryland Pug Rescue in November 2007. His previous names were "Simon" and "Fiyero" I believe. We are so happy to have Seamus, and he really completes our little family. He was great in our old apartment, but now we have a house with a little back yard for him to run around in and he loves it. I hope some day we can adopt another pug in need.

He credits Zuzu with helping him get through the grief, and that makes me so happy. While we still miss Pugsley terribly, Zuzu fills a huge void in our family. Some of the things she does are even very similar to Pugsley, but she's certainly her own woman! She's so much fun to have around. She's lost some more weight and seems to breathe easier. She's learned not to bark when we go to bed now, and when we say, "Go to bed," and point to the crate she goes right in! Such a good girl. She's earned some nicknames:
Little Face, Zuzu Magoo, Zooz, Short Stack, Half Pint, Toothless, Snaggletooth, and whatever else we can think of on the fly! She's not great about responding to her name, so we've reverted to Susie a few times to see if that works better, and it doesn't seem to. She's had a couple accidents in the house that we're trying to figure out the reason for. Overall she's very good overnight and while we're at work, but the couple times she's gone in the house we've both been there and she's shown no signs. So that's another thing we're working through, but I don't think it's too big a deal. She's a little comedian and we laugh at her all the time. Our favorite is when she smiles and her huge tongue is hanging out to the left and her two remaining front teeth are sticking out to the right. We are also still getting a kick out of her various and sundry snorts, snuffles, and snores. Zuzu and Phoenix are getting along famously. Phoenix annoys her a bit because unless he's laying with Chris or me, he wants to lay with her, so he drops down practically right on top of her no matter where she is. So she'll get up and move a few feet away, and he'll wait a minute and go right back over to her. She'll wait a minute, then get up and move a few feet away again, and he'll go right back over to her. This can go on for many minutes until we tell Phoenix to leave her alone!
All in all we're happy as clams and so glad we found MAPR and Zuzu!

Tug now called TANK adopted 2007 The Danenberger Family
UPDATE AUG 2008!:Hi there, it's Tank (you used to know me as Tug) and I wanted to send you an update about my life with my forever family. Things here have settled in quite nice. My brother and sister are great. My brother, Buddy, and I are always playing together whenever we are not sharing a sunny nap spot. Maggie, my sister, well, she's old and just watches us play. Sometimes she provides the commentary for Puggy Raceway around the living room, contrary to mom and dad's ear drums. I went on my first family road trip to meet the grand parents this summer and it was a great time, I had to be on my best behavior. I had some rough spots settling in with my family, as you know, but we have all found our grooves in the house now. I am quite happy and content. I have my own duties in the house, I keep the squirrels out of the yard. I'm very good at guard dog duties, constantly vigilant at the patio door! I just wanted to say thanks for helping me find my family. They love me very much, and mom says I round out the "funny farm" perfectly. I have attached some pictures of me and the siblings.

Violet adopted Nov. 2007 Koenig Family Baltimore, MD UPDATE!!
I have good news to report... as Miss Violet is doing WONDERFUL! For starters, Violet and Jackson are getting along great! They can often be found sleeping on the couch right next to each other or even on the same dog bed. They respect each others "eating area" and pace of eating (which is great because it was initially a little rocky). They walk perfectly on the leash together. They often share my leg to rest their heads to sleep (they are so sweet!) They respect each others toys and also share them, too. The only "issue" we are experiencing with Violet is her aggression towards other dogs... but I feel we have it completely under control. We have had several "mixers" with dogs of friends and family and we're discovering that after the initial teeth showing and dominance act... she settles down quite nicely.

Wilson adopted Sept 07 Holland family Rocky Mount,NC
UPDATE! Wilson is doing well. He is my little shadow and I mean that literally. I had my 2 adult sons, my brother, sister in law 2 nephews (9 and 6), niece (12), my sons dog and my crew here for Thanksgiving. After Wilson got the idea that he was not the alpha dog, he did really well. My niece carried him around like a baby. I have never had a pug before and don't know if he is typical, but I love him.

Zack Hi Everyone. It's me, Zack. I wanted to tell my success story to all of you. I have found my forever home with my forever family. We are a big bunch. There is my mom, Colleen, and my dad, Jerry. I have two pug sisters, Bella and Bess, and I have a very big doberman brother named Max. He's not as scary as he looks. He's a big softy. We pugs rule the roost. There is also a bird named Sweetie, but I stay away from him because he is pretty noisy. Anyhow, back to my new home. I have learned my way around pretty well. I still bump into a few things and my hearing still isn't very good, but my mom and dad have done lots of things to make it a little easier for me to get around. My pug sisters are very careful around me because I think they know that I am not as rough and tumble as I used to be. My mom and dad tell me everyday how much they love me and they make sure that I know it with lots of kisses and hugs. Speaking of kisses and hugs, my mom takes me to work with her at this place where older folks live. Well, I cannot walk ten feet without someone wanting to kiss or hug me and tell me how handsome I am. I stand very still and let everyone pet me and I just love it. It is very tiring though and I sleep a lot in my mom's office. So, I just want to tell everyone to hang in there. There is a forever home with lots of love for everyone. You are in the best hands with all the caring people involved with Mid Atlantic Pug Rescue. I am the happiest pug around. Love, Zack.
