MAPR needs your help with this Special Little Girl. Lilly was owner
surrender. It seems her previous owners 2 small children were too rough
on her.
08/05/2005 From the Foster Mom:
Lilly is very petite, weighing in today at a whopping 2.4 pounds. She is
very small for a pug even of her age. She has a wicked case of worms.
From her first exam, we suspected she had a fractured pelvis and leg.
The good news is that she doesn't. The bones of the pelvis just haven't
closed yet. The leg is not broken, but she does have bilateral ulnar
luxation in her front legs. This causes her to topple over as she walks.
Both front legs just sort of 'give out'. To not correct this at a young age
guarantees severe arthritis, and in 80% of cases, amputation. So we are
hoping for success with the corrective surgery. On Wednesday she will
have external fixators placed on both front legs. They run long pins
through two places on each leg and pull the bones and muscles into
alignment. She will have to have these for several months. There will be
issues of skin breakdown that will have to be carefully monitored.
Lilly will not be adopted out until she has recovered from her
surgeries.

08/09/05 From the Foster Mom:
Lilly has settled into her foster home. She is so feisty! Her front legs do let
her down regulary and she stumbles, but in the meantime her back legs
have strengthened and she pounces/bounces like a kangaroo! She is
eating well and growing and a dear to all who meet her. Lilly will under go
her Surgery Wednesday Morning. Lilly's Foster Mom wanted to share
some new pictures of her.
08/10/2005 From the Foster Mom:
Well it is 4:15 and I have been at Dr. Monce's office since a little after
10am. Doc did more x-rays of Lilly, and we may have another future
problem that we weren't counting on. Not only is her ulna out of place, it
hasn't grown as long as it should have, which means we may be facing
more surgeries down the line to extend the bone.
Today's surgery went well at first, the whole procedure she hung in there
and her pins and dressings are in place. After it was over and time for
her to wake up, she 'crumped' meaning she wasn't able to keep her
heart beating and breathing. Dr. Monce worked on her for nearly an
hour, and you should have seen the place covered in syringes and
medications to keep her alive.
When she finally came back to us and started hollering, he picked her up
with her bright pink dressings, handed her to me, and said
"congratulations, it's a girl!"
He is an amazing man, and you should hear Lilly at my side now
screaming her head off. After this afternoon, it is music to my ears! This
little girl has the most amazing will to live. She has been given medication
for pain, and will be on that for several days. She'll go back in on Friday
to have her dressings changed and checked.
08/12/2005 From the Foster Mom:
Miss Lilly is doing well. After a few tumultuous all niters
we went see the wonderful Dr. Monce on Thursday who adjusted her
dressings. She has been recuperating at my house since.
She is on pain meds and resting a good bit, but walks to the food bowl
(she hasn't missed a meal!) and across the bathroom floor to me. Her
dressings are cumbersome for her, but she is continually gaining
strength. I see glimmers of her "former self" coming back. She just had a
grand time gnawing on my finger and playing a gentle tug of war with a
sock! She is such a sweet love! Keep her in your prayers...she is such a
tiny thing!
08/16/2005 From the Foster Mom:
Lilly is currently perched up on my shoulder in her quest to get
comfortable. Dr.Monce re-x-rayed her today and changed her dressings.
To his dismay, one of the 4 pins had worked its way out. So the leg with
two pins in tact is coming along nicely. The jury is out on the leg with one
remaining pin. She will return to Dr Monce on Friday to check her
progress. If the pin needs to be replaced he will do it then. Dr. Monce is
hopeful that he can avoid a "crash" this time as she will need a fraction of
the time under as last time, but it does cause me to fret.
She is swollen and sore from her workout today. She is now dressed in
Carolina blue bandages. Her puggy love to eat has not diminished
however and she enjoyed her dinner as usual!
08/23/2005 From the Foster Mom:
Today Dr. Monce replaced a pin in each leg and secured her pins on
each leg. Her dressing is a little different this time and most of each leg is
exposed. Her "wrists" had gotten a little weak because of her full leg
bandages so we will be working to strengthen them. She tolerated the
procedure better this time and again we were blessed to have Mary in
attendance. Miss Lilly is on some pain meds now and really just wants to
snuggle so we are settled in for the evening. She whimpers a bit from the
discomfort, but manages to summon a hearty appetite for food! I'll keep
you all posted. Tomorrow I expect she'll feel more like herself!
08/26/2005 From The Foster Mom:
Lilly is starting to feel much better! She barked at the cat last night and
had a great chew session on a chewy. The new dressings are working out
well and she has more mobility in her "elbows". Her "wrists" are still giving
her some trouble, but now that she feels better she is clearly focusing on
them. The idea is that they will strengthen over time, but for now she has
a wobbly gait. Her back legs are very strong. During the last few days
when her front legs were surely hurting she managed to balance like a
kangaroo...especially when awaiting a meal! She is a spunky little thing!
08/30/2005 From The Foster Mom:
Miss Lilly visited Dr. Monce today. He is pleased with the progress of her
"elbows" and her "wrists". The pins seem to be doing the trick and her
joints in each leg are looking stable. He removed the elastics and most of
the dressings. Healing the skin beneath the dressing is the next order of
business as the skin has "broken down" a bit from pressure. So she is
receiving regular wound care and will see Dr. Monce again on Thursday.
09/02/2005 From the Foster Mom:
Lilly visited Dr. Monce for a follow up on Thursday, 09/01/2005. He
cleaned her areas of skin breakdown around the pin entrances and areas
that were underneath her dressings. She was sent home with no
dressings, only tape tips on the pins to prevent them from slipping
through. He is very satisfied with her left "elbow", but feels the right elbow
will need more time. In addition, he is very pleased with the renewed
strength in her "wrists". Her wounds are crusting over nicely, as confirmed
by Mary on 9/2. Her Rx for the moment: plenty of exercise to strengthen
those legs, oral antibiotics, and a very watchful eye on her pins. (Which
keeps her foster mom on pins and needles!) Her next follow up is
scheduled for Tuesday.
09/06/2005 From the Foster Mom:
Lilly had a great visit with Dr. Monce today. He removed the large pin from
each front leg! Now she only has a small pin in each front leg, which does
not extend through the leg! Her ability to walk is continually improving and
now she takes off in a flat out run (especially when food is involved!). In
fact, she is up to 3 lbs 3 oz!! Lilly goes back to see Dr. Monce at the end
of next week but we are pleased with her progress!
09/17/2005: Ms Lilly attended the Chatham Animal Rescue and Education
Woolf-a-Palooza. She had so many fans at this event. Lilly entered the
smallest dog competition and won a first place ribbon. Visit the
Wolf-a-Palooza page for more cute pictures of Lilly.
09/28/2005 From the Foster Mom:
Lily went back to see Dr. Monce on Monday, Sept. 26th. Unfortunately, the
repair on her right knee "didn't take". She underwent a third surgery and a
pin was reinserted, which is now rigged to the previously existing pin. Her
left leg is doing great and her remaining pin was removed from that leg.
Lily tolerated the surgery much better this time and is recuperating well
(on pain meds and an antibiotic.) She has learned how to hop around on
three legs and her foster mom is eagerly awaiting the use of her right leg!
